Antigone Akgün is staging Schiller's drama about a queen for the first time at the Theater Aachen's main stage.

When Mary, Queen of Scots, is suspected of murdering her husband, she seeks refuge in England with her distant relative, Queen Elizabeth I. With her claim to the English throne, she poses a threat to Elizabeth and her advisors; she is captured and charged with high treason. Schiller’s famous drama about queens begins three days before Mary’s planned execution and centers on the encounter between the two women, who engage in a duel using the weapons of reason and emotion. Against the backdrop of political power and human powerlessness, Schiller explores the possibility of responsible rule.

Director Antigone Akgün explores the following questions: How does female leadership endure in a system established by men? How does power change the people who wield it? Antigone Akgün’s Aachen production of “Unser Deutschlandmärchen” was invited to the prestigious “Radikal jung” festival for young directors in Munich in 2025. She is now staging a production at the Großes Haus for the first time.
