Plan a visit

Karlsbrunnen – The Heart of the Market and an Echo of Centuries Past

Since the 14th century, the Charlemagne Fountain has been a central feature of Aachen’s market square. The bronze basin rests heavy and still, while the figure of Charlemagne looks out over the square. It serves as a reminder that power, trade, and urban life once converged here. The original statue was moved several times over the years and now stands in the Centre Charlemagne. A replica sits atop the fountain, keeping the historical heart of the site visible. As you linger by the fountain, the sounds of today’s market blend with visions of past coronation ceremonies and political decisions that once shaped this square.
