Located between the main train station and downtown, this building offers a modern take on Aachen’s cityscape. The black and yellow façade echoes the city’s colors, giving the building a distinctive look. Designed by Gerhard Wittfeld, the complex opens onto Borngasse with a curved staircase that connects the urban space to the elevated forecourt. On the way up, you’ll encounter a large-scale mural on the substation, which adds an artistic touch to the austere architecture. Behind the clean lines lies an ensemble of historic building blocks and modern additions, linked together by passageways. The building demonstrates how contemporary architecture can sensitively integrate into Aachen’s established urban fabric without losing its own voice.
